Can I make bank transfer orders show as Awaiting verification instead of Pending?

My team keeps confusing unpaid bank transfer orders with normal pending ones.

Yes. Go to Settings → Store Settings → Payment Gateway, click Configure on Bank Transfer, and under Order status while unverified choose Awaiting verification. You can also pick Where they can submit the proof: the confirmation page, My Orders, or both. Save, and new bank transfer orders will wait in that status until you approve the proof.
