Can I use reCAPTCHA only on checkout and not on login?

Yes. Open Plugins, then Recaptcha, and under Where to show it tick only the forms you want protected, for example Checkout / place order. A form is protected only when its box is ticked and Enable reCAPTCHA is on. Untick Customer login to leave login as it is, then click Save.
