Can I place a test order while my store is in demo mode?

Yes. Go to Orders and click Place Test Order. Your store opens in test-order mode, so you can go from product page to confirmation even while the store is in Demo. Test orders don't count as sales and are hidden from the Orders list unless you tick Show test orders. You can make up to 10; clear them with Purge test orders.
