When I duplicate a variable product, what SKUs do the variants of the copy get?

I duplicated my kurta to make a new colourway, and the variant SKUs look long and strange.

Duplicate clears the variant SKUs on the copy and builds new ones, because every SKU must be unique in your store.

  • Parent SKU: the original SKU with -copy- and a short random code, for example KURTA-101-copy-x7f2.
  • Variant SKUs: built from the copy's URL handle and the option values, for example COTTON-KURTA-COPY-SIZE-M.

To tidy them up:

  1. Change the Title and, in the Organization card, the URL handle. Renaming the title doesn't change the handle by itself.
  2. Edit the SKU (parent) in the Inventory card.
  3. In the Variants card, type your own codes in the SKU column, or clear a box so Wcart builds a new one from the new handle.
  4. Set Status to Active and click Save.
