What is the Default price box on a variable product for?

I see both a Default price card and prices in the variant table, and don't know which one shoppers see.

The Default price card is a back-up price for a Variable product that does not have any variants yet. - Default price and Default sale price are used on product listings, quick view and the product card while the product has no variants. - Once you add variants in the Variants card, shoppers see the variant prices instead. The default price is no longer shown. If you always add variants, you can leave the default price empty. If you plan to add variants later but want the product visible with a price now, fill in Default price, then click Save.
