Can I change a Simple product into a Variable product later?

Question

I created a T-shirt as a Simple product and now I want to add sizes. I cannot find where to change the type.

The product type is locked once the product is created, so you cannot switch it in place. 1. Create a new product of type Variable and add the sizes as variants. 2. Copy over the description, images and SEO. 3. Set the old Simple product to Draft so it disappears from the storefront. Doing this before the product has sales history keeps things tidy.
