Can I add my own CSS to tweak how the storefront looks?

I want to make a few small style changes that the theme settings don't offer, like hiding an element on mobile.

Yes. Open CSS Snippet in the Settings sidebar. It needs the Code Snippets plugin. Without the plugin the page shows an upgrade card.

There are three boxes:

  • All devices: applied on every screen size.
  • Tablet: applied on screens up to 1024px wide.
  • Mobile: applied on screens up to 640px wide.

Type plain CSS rules (no style tags needed) and click Save Changes. Your CSS is added to every storefront page.

It is not applied in theme previews, so a theme you are trying out isn't restyled by CSS written for your current one. If you need CSS on certain pages only, or desktop-only CSS, add a CSS snippet in Code Snippet instead.
